Chelsea's story

Chelsea grew up in Bend, Oregon. She was an overly spirited Mountain View High School Cougar and cross-country running was a huge part of her dorky teenage identity. Chelsea left Bend to attend Colorado College and somehow managed to get a degree in biology and Latin American studies without missing a good toga party. She took full advantage of the "Rocky Mountain high" and acquired Colorado-ish hobbies such as backpacking and backcountry skiing. After college, Chelsea worked briefly as a wilderness therapy instructor for at-risk youth and traveled to Africa. Although her original childhood dream was to own her own dog kennel, she decided she'd rather fulfill her later childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian... even though this still means cleaning up dog poop. Chelsea attended vet school at Colorado State University and then did her internship at the Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle. She now works on mainly dogs and cats in Redmond, Washington.

Chelsea saw Jeff one day while perusing potential dates on Match.com (Hey, this is the 21st century, right?!). In the mist of being horribly frustrated that pretty much all guys post their idea mate as a height of 5'2" to 5'9", she was immediately interested when Jeff listed his as 5'8" to 6'6"! Not only that, his screen name was "sportyscienceguy," which pretty much sounded like her fraternal twin. In the end it was his crunchy outdoorsiness, mixed with a touch of nerdiness, that pulled her in. So, she signed up, sent him an e-mail, and the rest is history. It would be nice if she could just get her money back for paying for a whole three month membership! :-)

Jeff's story

Fort Collins, Colorado was Jeff's childhood home. He was a Fort Collins High School Lambkin (ridiculous mascot, huh). He dabbled in all sorts of activities while growing up such as he played piano and viola, he studied Tae Kwon Do for years, he skied, backpacked, and climbed, and he did construction and design in various school and community theaters where he met many of his lifelong friends. Jeff went to college at the University of Colorado in Boulder where he majored in Computer Science. He was also a resident advisor in CU's dorms where he met more of his lifelong friends. Seattle and the University of Washington was Jeff’s next stop where he spent 6+ years working toward a PhD in Computer Science & Engineering. During grad school he moonlighted as a ski instructor and whitewater river guide. He now works for Intel Research in Seattle and investigates sensor technologies for mobile computing.

One day in early 2006, shortly after signing up for match.com (as "sportyscienceguy" of course!), Jeff got an email from someone nicknamed "c_n." He actually didn't think much of this email at first because "c_n" had no profile posted, revealing very little about herself. However, a day or so later as Jeff was reading c_n's email more carefully, he realized that this was no ordinary piece of text, and not just because the font was nice. It was clear that c_n had a passion for life and had interests right up sportyscienceguy's alley. She loved the outdoors including rafting, skiing, hiking, and more; she seemed so intelligent and gung-ho about life. So sportyscienceguy decided, profiles be damned, he was defo going to take a chance on her (in the words of Abba). The rest, as a wise woman once wrote, is indeed history.

Together

Jeff and Chelsea have already done all sorts of adventuring in the short two and a half years of their relationship. They've been to Austria and Germany. They've been on multiple whitewater river adventures. They've been to Hawaii three times. They've visited each others' families many times. They've bought a house together in Bothell, Washington and slowly acquired four-legged dependants as Chelsea brings "unwanted" critters home from work. First it was Shelly the turtle, then Mr. Tweakers the rabbit, and finally Smiley the dog. Jeff is wondering what will be brought home home next as the pets seem to keep getting larger... a shark?
